Head Quarters 3rd Division 16th Army Corps,
Office of The A.A.I. General

Montgomery, Ala. April 30th 1865

My Dear Mother,

This is the first opportunity which has presented itself for us to forward letters since our leaving Spanish Fort, or Blakley, which place we started from on the 13th Inst. and after thirteen days tedious marching reached this place. We had splendid weather during the time of our marching, and by the way one of those thirteen days was spent at Greenville which town will long be remembered by our boys as an Oasis of Pine forrests of Alabama as our line of march was through such a country untill within nine or ten miles of Montgomery.

We are very comfortably situated here, our Head Quarters are in one of the finest Mansions in the City. The citizens of this place "most of them" appear to be very glad that our force came here. You would hardly know by going through the City that thare was soldiers here, as the troops are camped about three miles from the place.

Today for the first time our transports arrived at this place, and sorry to say they brought no mails for us but they brought us the Official news of Lincoln death. We had seen an account of it in Southern papers and from Rebel Prisoners some time ago, but nothing from our own lines and we consider nothing Official till then. All I have to say to the Rebs is if this War continues they will find a more bitter enemy in Johnson than they ever did in the one they have just murdered.

We have received no pay yet, nor can I say when we will be. However, I hope the day will soon come. I have not had a cent since leaving Cain, Ill.

Captain Wilson the Adjutant General is going to New Orleans and will take this to that place.

I am quite well, and hope soon to be home again. Give my regards to all.

Your Affectionate Son
Edward G. Stevens
